Siri Is Coming Soon To An iOS 5 Device Near You, No Jailbreak Required

By

Siri is one of the iPhone 4S’ biggest selling points, and I think anyone who’s had chance to try out the feature would agree that’s it’s pretty exceptional. For the time being, it’s exclusive to Apple’s latest iPhone, but one hacker claims to have it running on any device running iOS 5, and says a jailbroken device is not necessary.

An iPhone developer that goes by the name of Jackoplane announced today that he has successfully ported Siri to other iOS 5 devices, and gotten it to communicate with Apple’s servers without any issues. It means that all iOS 5 devices are capable of running Siri — you just need to install it.

So when can you get it? Well, according to Jackoplane, he’s not sure yet, and does note in messages posted to Twitter that “the hardest part is still ahead.”

The full list of devices supported by Jackoplane’s hack includes:

  • iPad 1
  • iPad 2
  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPod touch 4G

It’s unclear at this point how Jackoplane has gotten Siri to work on other devices, or when the software will be available. However, I have a feeling that Apple will put a stop to this soon after its release by blocking any device that isn’t an iPhone 4S from its servers.

Still, this is promising news for those without an iPhone 4S, and those who would like to use Siri on their iPod touch and iPad. Would you like to see Siri on older devices?

I’d love Siri on my iPad2, but I can’t see it happening. Apple will hold it back for the iPad3 as an upgrade incentive. It’s just good business.

  2. Rose says:

It’d be cool if they could get it to work!  I’ve been reading a whole bunch of funny stuff Siri says here – http://stuffsirisays.wordpress

  3. prof_peabody says:

This is nonsense.  The only way you could do this is if pretty much *all* of Siri is on the server and not local.  Even if that’s true, it should be child’s play for Apple to differentiate real Siri requests from the requests this hacker is making.

It would also probably require either an app itself (Apple gets to approve or disapprove there), and/or making the server think your device is a 4s, both of which also require jail breaking.

  4. Soho22 says:

Makes no sense though, because they made it look like it needs the 4S power, which the ipad 2 easily has.
It might very well be one of the things we don’t get because it “doesn’t look/feel right” or some other crap, like: Alarms, world clock, lockscreen widgets, calculator, geo fencing in reminders etc.

  5. MacHead says:

This is nonsense BS, anyone can make a claim like this if they dont offer any proof. How are people gonna load Siri to a phone that wont let you load simple applications without a jailbreak!

  6. volodoscope says:

Apple is just gonna block all incoming connections to Siri from devices other than iPhone 4S, simple.

  7. MacGoo says:

Sooo…he’s going to distribute the app without a jailbreak. Which means submitting it for App Store approval. Something tells me that’s not going to fly over at Cupertino.

  8. Jamie says:

The original source to this is iJailbreak.comhttp://www.ijailbreak.com/ipad… They broke the news yesterday and CydiaHelp stole their credit. Please give proper credit where needed – iJailbreak.

  9. Ninjacheater2 says:

Apple probably won’t put Siri on iPad because Siri needs an internet connection to function which the iPhone almost always has but a wifi only iPad does not. Users would find Siri not working whenever they weren’t near a hotspot aggravating.

  10. ahmedomarz94 says:

Dude, without iPhone 4S jailbreak not without the device jailbreak. You’ll need to jailbreak your iPhone 4 to get it but the developer didn’t need a jailbroken iPhone 4S to extract the files.

  11. baby_Twitty says:

wtf are u guys talking about? You know a SIGNIFICANT portion of Siri’s duty is to help customers with calling and messaging people right?

Can you imagine countless phone calls and complains make to the Apple support department by all those less tech-savvy customers asking, “Siri couldn’t handle my request when i asked it to dial the hospital on my iPad 2!?! (Read >>>iPAD<<<)” Or “Siri didn’t perform on the iPad 2 when i told it to sms my wife!!!”

You guys should know better, Siri is STILL IN BETA. (Or else, go watch the Lets Talk iPhone announcement all over again.)
It doesn’t even take a genius to understand that Apple wants NO major hiccups or confusion when rolling out Siri BETA, thats why its on the iPHONE 4S first!

  12. Sgt_Pepper says:

Like a lot of people commenting, I’m quite dubious about this too.

But in theory, he might’ve just modified the iOS 5 installer bundle (the files with a .ipsw extension that iTunes downloads when you update) for the 4S to install on other devices. Or maybe he added Siri to the installers for other devices.

Obviously, I’m not buying into this one until I see some hard evidence, but I’m sure it’s possible.

  13. MacHead says:

Anyone who distributes/installs/downloads Siri files to run on a device they have not been authorized to run Siri on will be committing piracy. With Siri being the 4S main selling feature you can bet Apple will come after those who do it.

  14. MacHead says:

And, being that it has to connect to Apples Servers, it wont be hard for them to find out who did it

  15. Sgt_Pepper says:

I’d probably just call it copyright infringement, or maybe even breach of contract, but whatever. “Tom-ay-toh”, “tom-ah-toe”.

But yes, you’re right. This goes without saying. I’m pretty sure that any “unauthorised modification” of Apple’s software, like jailbreaking is sometimes said to be, but that’s not really the issue here. It’s so obvious that people will flout EULAs and copyright law, because it’s difficult to stop them.

Cupertino will go after him if this works, and he’s hosting the hack somewhere public, but it’ll probably just amount to Apple sending a cease and desist letter. By that time it will be available from plenty of other sources anyway.

Apple know this too – they’re not naive. They’ll just ensure that non-4S devices are unable to access the servers providing Siri’s backend.

  16. MacGoo says:

That’s how you read it huh? I read “Siri Is Coming Soon To An iOS 5 Device Near You, No Jailbreak Required” exactly the way it was written.

The article also clarifies with this “but one hacker claims to have it running on any device running iOS 5, and says a jailbroken device is not necessary.” Pretty clear. Also pretty misleading on both CoM and the developer’s part.

A developer can load whatever app he wants on his iPhone without jailbreaking it. It’s distribution that is tricky without App Store approval. So yes, while HE doesn’t require a jailbreak to load Siri on any of his devices, anyone wanting to run the finished product will indeed need a jailbreak, unless he can get the app approved by the App Store, which will never happen.

  17. MacGoo says:

    Obvious statement is obvious.

In addition, people trying to load Siri onto devices it hasn’t been released on are probably not going to be calling Apple tech support to complain.I would also love to have Siri on my iPad 2, if for no other reason than to try it out. But I’ll wait until Apple sees fit to release it, which I assume they will in due time. If not, oh well. I’m due for an upgrade next year, and I’ll grab the iPhone 4G, or whatever they end up calling the next one.

  18. faat says:

    video or it never happened…

  19. Anonymous says:

Not so simple.  The “developers” can probably spoof the model numbers to Apple’s servers so they appear to be 4S’s.

  20. Anonymous says:

    You’re clearly not a developer.

  21. KevinGilmartin says:

So you’re saying Siri won’t appear on iPad, just because a part of it allows voice interaction with SMS and phone calling functions? With respect, that’s an extremely short-sighted statement to make.
Of course you’ll always get the dumb ones who try to send a text or make a call on a device that doesn’t support those functions, but Apple didn’t get where it is today by legislating for idiots. Siri is already integrating with RTM, as we saw today; integration with Calendar, FaceTime, Contacts, iMessage and myriad other apps is only a small matter of time away. I’d suggest a couple of months, possibly only weeks, before we start to see Siri updates tying it to many more core iPad functions.
Siri isn’t a remote for people too lazy to type a text message, it’s an HCI interface and would be perfect on the iPad.

  22. bobseager says:

Anyway chance of figuring out if mirroring can be added onto any IOS5 device.

  23. 1forest1 says:

Sorry but he said that his hack needed a jailbreak on twitter and that many blogs including cultofmac got it wrong

  24. Dorje Sylas says:

So? Those of us who use a WiFi iPad are already aware of issues like this. Kinda hard to play turn based Gamecenter games without a hot spot, but we still have access.

There are good reasons to do voice control on an iPad. One easy example is a voice controlled cookbooks/timer. Expand your mind sir.

  25. MacGoo says:

    Thanks for the clarification.

  26. Coinmaster says:

Just so you know, after checking @jackoplane (Twitter feed), he said that all of the blogs are wrong, and a jailbreak is required. GET THE FACTS RIGHT, CULT OF MAC!

  27. MrVukas says:

Jackoplane Jack Okay, so many blogs are getting this wrong, you DO need a jailbreak for Siri. I currently don’t have a JB to get the info I need from the 4S2 hours ago Favorite Retweet Reply

  28. Fpernett says:

    DO you need jailbreak

  29. Oriondlc says:

As someone that has a vision problem and has a very hard time typing and reading type it would be wonderfully to have.
I hope Apple allows this or makes him Adela and lets it out from them directly. This is really needed. I live on my iPad.

  30. eyyad says:

I heard in the beginning of 2012 other iOS 5 devises will get Siri I am sure they will !

  31. eyyad says:

No and I am so against Jailbreaking its stupid !

  32. eyyad says:

    Jailbreak not required duh

  33. Dg212 says:

    Heck yeah! :D

  34. Dilbert A says:

    But is he wrong?

  35. Karan Sukklai says:

    yeah!

  36. Cythrelo says:

Seriously? I think jailbreaking might not be the stupid thing here…

  37. Bitter Witch says:

Wanting to customize your phone is stupid?…

  38. Dowe Scheller says:

Omg You need a jailbreak, he didn’t need a jailbroken 4S in order to receive the files he needed to port Siri. That is what he was referring to when he said no jailbreak was needed. It would be impossible to port the software over onto a non jailbroken device anyways.

  39. Roger Ramshit says:

If you eat meat then you are killing animals so I guess it’s just a matter of perspective. Most people would agree with you because Siri is a free service and people want to believe Apple when they say that it is only to maintain user experience that they do not release it for earlier models…any other reason would be brand damaging. Let’s just hope they do the rIght thing.

  40. eyyad says:

so you saying iPhone 4s won’t come with Siri in it ? lol

  41. eyyad says:

    its my opinion !

  42. droidsid says:

Unless Apple approves it, we are not going to have Siri on our not-iPhone 4S device.

  43. Danstar7 says:

No, you dont need to jailbreak the iphone 4s, you can find Siri in the iphone 4s ipsw.

  44. eyyad says:

    oh ok thanks !

  45. nthnm says:

I just don’t think the iPhone 4 has enough processing power to run this smoothly. It lags a bit on things Apple has approved for the iPhone 4.

  46. Miguel Arber says:

I’d like to see Siri on Mac…. I see it as something really useful.

  47. MrKevinSD says:

    1. A “little lag” is totally tollerable.
    2. The one thing that irks me about apple is the constant need to upgrade. They said that the original iphone was not capable of handling pictures coming in through MMS and the only option was to upgrade. = BS

  48. Gy says:

    No jailbreak required?

Wow this site sucks, do you guys post this to get readers or is it just your stupidity?

  49. Leeanna Warner says:

Jail breaking screwed up my last iPhone and I will never do it again.. So yes, jail breaking is an idiotic move. In my opinion of course. But if you’d like to wait two weeks for another phone, then go right on ahead, because cydia had some bugs that literally made my phone unusable.. It wouldn’t even boot past the apple logo, it also wasn’t usable with iTunes. I couldn’t restore it either. It wouldn’t do ANYTHIng all because I tried to change my font..

  50. BobDoLe says:

you guys realize he was exposed to be a fraud, right? josh tucker (his chosen tester) came out and exposed him. jackoplane then made his twitter private.

chpwn and stroughtonsmith are working on something real though.

  51. Jake says:

Let me make this clear. If a hacker of any sort, except maybe @MuscleNerd:twitter  or @Comex:twitter claims to have a hack but doesn’t give any sort of proof, I don’t believe them. This especially includes those who hold back pictures or a detail of the exploit.
